An Opportunity to Save an Important Ecosystem ...two fabulous properties on the
Upper Gananoque River!
An Invitation to Preserve The Crank and Summerfield Tract on Gananoque River
Just as was done with the successful purchase of the Sheffield property in 2010, partners are fundraising to preserve special places. The Nature Conservancy of Canada and Ontario Nature are able to match private donations with funds from an innovative conservation program designed in partnership with the federal government.
Thanks to this, the partners have managed to raise all but $168,000—necessary to secure the government funding. The total
cost of the two properties is $765,000.
The local partners have organized a public campaign to raise the remaining $168,000 and we have managed to raise over half of that amount to date. We need to raise $80,000 before the campaign closes on December 31st, 2011.

Species at Risk 4H club up and Running
The Council has just started their second year of a 4H Species at Risk club. Last year was the first year the club was active and saw members create posters, signs and videos showcasing skills they learned from the club as well as information on local species at risk.
This year, the club is focusing on 4 local species at risk and what the members can do to help protect them. The first one that was covered was Chimney Swifts. The first meeting gave the members background knowledge of the species as well as the Bird Studies Canada Swift Watch program. The group will be taking part in the Swift Watch by identifying suitable habitat in the Brockville area. The Swift Watch has different parts that can be done at different times of the year, seeing as the birds have already headed south for the winter the club will identify the chimneys that they could return to. Hopefully next year the club will get a chance to monitor the chimneys they identify this year.
