School Tree Planting

A local class out planting trees for stream rehabilitation.
Although the majority of our tree planting is done by private contractors council members plant a number of trees with local school and students. In 2011 nine classes and over 240 students participated in tree planting.
The school plants are an educational program as well as a chance to get the students out of the class room and into the outdoors. The larger plantings in old fields educate the students on forestry in the area as well as the history of forestry in the area. Planting along streams allows students to learn about water quality, stream bank erosion and over all aquatic health of lakes and streams.
The tree planting program offers the opportunity for students and teachers to learn about other Council projects for example cattle exclusion from streams, stream restoration and species at risk.
