Envirothon
The Leeds-Grenville Stewardship Council has been actively involved with the local Envirothon competition for many years. The Envirothon program is a high school program that brings teams from local high schools out to 3 different locations on 3 different days and covers topics from forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and more. The teams are quizzed on each topic on each day with a final test being delivered at the final event. Throughout the weeks the program is taking place the students are given homework that is related to each section being covered at that weeks event, this homework is marked and teams receive points for properly completed homework and the test for each section. At the final event all the points are calculated and a team is crowned the winner. This group has the option of continuing on to the provincial competition.
The annual Envirothon competition was organized by the committee of Amy, Laura, Martin, Brenda Graham, and Kim Robinson after the retirement of Envirothon stalwarts Bob Gollinger and Jack Henry. The training workshops were held at Limerick Forest (forestry and soils) and St Lawrence Islands National Park - Landon Bay (wildlife and aquatics). The final competition for Leeds and Grenville was hosted at Charleston Lake Park. As usual we were supported by a large network of people who instructed, organized or served as judges for the competition. Teams from Brockville Collegiate Institute placed first and second, and team 1 from St Michael Catholic High School placed third.
